Lesson 37: Jealousy

"Habab e bahr ko dheko kaisay sir uthata hay Takabur wo buri shae hay k foran toot jata hay"



Jealousy means to be jealous or envious of someone's else trait or good thing and to be upset on that quality or thing. Jealousy creates feelings of enmity. A jealous person wishes that no blessing should be there with any other person. It is such a bad habit that produces restlessness by seeing any one's own brother in good condition.



An envious person can not harm others but keeps on burning in his own fire. A jealous person can never be contented. A jealous person always uses abusive words and bad wishes to others. Therefore, Allah has directed to seek His shelter against a jealous person. It is said by Allah 



وَمِن شَرِ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ (السن: 5)



Translation: And from the evil of an envier when he envies.



 



i. Difference between jealousy and pride:



Jealousy and pride are two different things. Jealousy is not allowed but pride is. allowed. Pride is this, that on observing someone, else quality or good thing, heart becomes happy and a person longs for that object or quality and wishes that Allah grant him the same: It is right and allowed. The Holy Prophet said in this regard: "Two type of person deserve to be proud of, the one who is given wealth by Allah and he spends in Allah's path and the other one who is granted knowledge and he decides among people according to that (knowledge).



 



ii. Jealousy in light of Quran:



Jealousy is condemned in Holy Quran as it is revealed through the given verses.



وَمِنْ شَرِ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَة (السن: 5)



Translation: And from the evil of an envier when he envies.



ام يحسُدُونَ النَّاسَ عَلَى مَا اللهُمُ اللهُ مِن فَضْلِهِ (النساء : 54)



Translation: Or do they envy people for what Allah has given them of His bounty? Jealousy in Light of hadees:



In ahadees, enviousness has been condemned too. The Holy Prophet said



إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْحَسَنَ، فَإِنَّ الْحَسَدَ يَأْكُلُ الْحَسَنَاتِ كَمَا تَأْكُلُ النَّارُ الْخَطَبَ .



Translation: See, stay away from jealousy as it eats good deeds such as fire (eats) woods.



The Holy Prophet said that prejudice is produced due to anger and envy is produced due to prejudice.



"O Muslims, Be, warned", that cursed thing should not be produced among you which destroyed past Ummahs, that destructive thing is jealousy and enmity.



 



iii. Disadvantages of Jealousy:



No harm is done to other by being jealous, However, an envious person harms himself. He is restless and frustrated all time. The harms of envy are given below. 



Elim nation of mental and heartily peace:



A jealous person is restless all the time and becomes upset on seeing others happy and finishes his own inner peace over observing delight of other people.



End of Piety:



The good deeds of a person are removed due to jealousy as it is a sin and disliked by Allah



Burning in fire of jealousy:



A jealous person becomes distressed on observing state of his superior and wastes his qualities to disarray good circumstances of other people. He burns in his own fire. No spirit other than jealousy and prejudice is produced in heart of a jealous person.



Removal of contentment:



Jealousy is a moral disease. A jealous person is not happy on his state. He can not see better condition of others and disconnects relations with them. This aspect finishes contentment in him and he becomes thankless.



End of collective welfare:



In a collective welfare situation all the members of society are prosperous but a jealous person doesn't like it and wants to see people in miserable condition. Due to this bad thinking, he becomes degraded in the eyes of society.



A way to get rid of jealousy:



If a person desires to get rid of bad morality like jealousy than he needs to learn a lesson from the historical examples of simplicity and contentment of great religious men. In addition, he should observe and learn lesson from the crimes and degradation produced from lust of wealth and power.
